HAVE WE MET?

Hoosier Environmental Council (HEC) is a vital advocate for Indiana's environment, acting as a voice and watchdog for Hoosiers across the state. Founded in 1983, HEC has dedicated our four decades of service to mobilizing people all over our state to create a healthy, clean, and safe environment for everyone who calls Indiana home. 

We are a statewide organization and proud to have members from all of Indiana’s 92 counties. We aim to make the needs of Hoosier community members the guiding light of our advocacy and actions. In doing so, HEC raises awareness and fosters understanding about the best practices and policies that will protect our air, water, and land.

WHAT WE DO

Our team of experts and dedicated staff educate on policies that ensure environmental protection and sustainable practices. In strategic partnership with grassroots organizations, decision makers, and diverse communities, we promote positive change that protects our natural areas, promotes environmental health and justice, and establishes environmental actions and policies that will leave our state better for future generations. 

We are unrelenting in our determination to protect Indiana's forests, groundwater, and lakes, but there's still much work to be done. Indiana remains one of the least green states (ranked 49th by Forbes). We're working to change that through key initiatives including: 

• Legislative Advocacy: Driving policy changes to ensure environmental protection and sustainable practices. 
• Community Engagement: Building partnerships and listening to community needs that guide our advocacy and actions.
• Educational Outreach: Raising awareness and fostering understanding through statewide educational efforts. 
• Acting on Climate: Supporting the transition to clean, affordable renewable energy and a shift away from polluting fossil fuels, helping Indiana reduce climate change and prepare for the climate future that lies ahead.
